In 2023 South Africa will witness the biggest film festival ever to be staged in Limpopo. Over 35 projects will be screened as part of the festival in about 150 venues across the province, free of charge. The festival is also virtual, giving access to a wider audience across the globe who may join in via the festival mobile app, website and other digital streaming platforms. This is an exciting time for newcomers in the local film industry as this inaugural film festival is aimed at youth filmmakers across the provinces with projects made between 2019 and January 2023. This festival will launch the first ever province-wide distribution where several screenings will be conducted at the audience doorstep via mobile cinema screenings in high schools, tertiary institutions, public halls and theatres over the period of 6 weeks. Viewers will be treated to various forms of entertainment genres that are generally not accepted in other festivals from Short form to Feature projects, Fiction or Reality.
This festival is meant for the filmmakers who want to launch their careers to greater professional heights. This film festival is for the next generation of filmmakers and the audience. Projects made by youth or that are targeted at youth will have a better chance of being selected. While projects from across the country are accepted, Limpopo filmmakers will be given a priority status. Â
Only projects completed between December 2019 to January 2023 are eligible for selection.
               Eligible Genres
Submissions for all projects are currently open and will remain open until the 22 January 2023. There will also be another window of submission to open on the 2nd week of February for only one week. But this is only reserved for short films and special projects.
Next Gen Film Fest is more than just a festival. It is also a competitive screening platform that encourages filmmakers to make projects that resonates with the audience. This is a free of charge event. However, audience will be encouraged to vote for their favourite project where titles with most votes will eventually win great prizes that will take their filmmaking career to another level.Â
In this festival awards, project that wins the audience awards by garnering the most votes/likes throughout the festival will win a fully funded Television Movie at a total budget of R400Â 000. This project will also acquire a distribution guarantee for national and international platforms. Voting of the project will take place on the festival app, social media platform and the website.
Every Saturday between the 23 March to the 25 February, The festival will be hosting various workshops and conferences across the five regions in Limpopo. Venues will be announced at a later stage. For those that are unable to attend, these conferences will be live on various festival’s platforms and will also be available as Video Catch up on Video On Demand. The main conferences with guest speakers and industry heavyweights will be hosted on the 03 & 04 March preceding the Awards Night Ceremony.Â

Limpopo Next Gen Film Festival will run from the 23 January 2023 to 04 March 2023. Screenings and voting will take place from the 23 January to 25 February, both virtually and on mobile cinemas. The conferences and awards will be on the 3rd and 4th March 2023.Â
This is an online streaming and mobile screening festival. Anyone from anywhere can attend the festival via our app as well as our website. Those who are in Limpopo will be able to join any of our 150 locations across the province to watch content on the mobile big screens. The conferences and awards will take place in Polokwane.
Limpopo Next gen Film Festival 2023 membership is free of charge. Selected private venues may charge entrance fee to selected titles but all municipal and community screening venues are all free.
The festival is targeted at youth filmmakers, but anyone is allowed to submit their project other festival. Festival organizers will use their own discretion on final selection of the project for the festival.
No payment required. All project submissions are free. Instead, all selected titles for the festival will be paid a participation fee.
